Open-edition print
2021, New York · Original: colored pencil on paper.
Double Gaze begins as a simple head, then fractures into stacked planes, part face, part diagram. A central spine splits the portrait, holding one eye forward while another eye slips sideways inside a tilted frame, as if the self is looking in two directions at once. Rust-colored lines and quick hatch marks build depth like a plan drawing: edges, seams, shadows, each compartment carrying a different expression.
Rather than resolving into one likeness, the figure stays layered and unresolved. The mouth and jaw arc through the composition like a continuous path, but every turn is interrupted by hard corners and cutouts, mapping shifting moods, present and elsewhere, calm and uneasy, colliding inside a single person.
